Hyaluronic Acid… don’t get put off by the name, I know it sounds like something out of a lab but did you know that HA is naturally found in the skin and is the key molecule involved in skin moisture as it has the unique ability to BIND and RETAIN water molecules. HA is associated with hydration, lubrication, its space filling capacity and regulates aspects of TISSUE REPAIR. The largest amounts of HA are found naturally in your skin, connective tissue and eyes. Its main function is to retain water to keep your tissues well lubricated and moist. Hyaluronic Acid can actually hold up to 1000 times its weight in water.
With the natural ageing process the body produces less HA. Think of HA as the filling in the sandwich. Hyaluronic Acid is really the go between collagen and water. Collagen needing the water molecules to maintain their integrity and as we age when HA runs short and the collagen cells no longer hold onto enough water this causes the collagen to deteriorate leading to skin elasticity loss, fine lines & wrinkles. HA is the key in keeping skin smooth and supple and addressing anti-ageing skin concerns which start becoming visible on the skin from around the age of 25. We can’t stop the natural ageing process of the body but we can address anti-ageing concerns and support the skin naturally so visible signs of ageing such as fine lines and wrinkles become less evident ans the skin is plumped becomes tighter and firmer.
HA also regulates TISSUE REPAIR so regardless of your skin type, your skin will reap the benefits of the healing and moisturisation that HA will provide for it. Remember even oily and blemish prone skin which is often stripped with harsher cleansers, instead of delicate cleansing creams, need moisture to retain balance. Often when skin is dehydrated, as the skin naturally compensates for the dryness that is occurring, it produces excess sebum and this excess oil actually causes congestion which can lead to breakouts, blemishes, blackheads and enlarged pores. Some think they have blemish prone skin but in fact they have extremely dehydrated skin causing breakouts. Sensitive skin, dry skin and combination skin all benefit from HA as locking in moisture into the skin helps maintain the skin allowing it to heal and settle and the HA assists the skin in repairing itself.
